Happy New Year!
Often when January rolls around again we women turn to thoughts of self improvement. Going to the gym ascends to #1 on the priority list, healthy snacking becomes a new, positive option, & therefore bad habits are gradually replaced by better ones and on and on. Most often, self improvement starts with a change in the way we think resulting in the desired physical changes.
I believe that easily achievable, small changes on the outside can affect change by keeping you on that positive track.
- A quick glance in the mirror as you rush through the day can really be uplifting when you see that indeed, the dark circles that have always bothered you have been lessened and improved with a new concealer you finally tried. I loveBobbi Brown’s miraculous correctors and concealers. You can even chat with an artist while you’re online if you have questions or need help.
- A brightening shade of lipstick and gloss can brighten up your face and your mood.
- A blue/red or blue based pink lipstick makes your teeth automatically look whiter. Wearing a shade like this can help you get through the weeks it takes for those Crest White strips to kick in! Here’s an informative piece about one woman’s journey through the daunting world of red lipsticks.
- Have you ever tried filling in your eye brows? Your eyebrows frame your face. Subtly filling them in with a shadow and brush highlights your eyes and subtly transforms your face.
- Have you recently given up smoking and want to get rid of that dull cast to your skin? Or how about sun spots and freckles that you’ve been wishing would disappear? Get to the makeup counter right now. The new brightening products do really work & can make your skin look years younger. Remember to look for products containing sunscreen.
- Lifeless locks? Next time you go to your hair stylist why not try highlights? They can add shine and body to your hair as well as a glow to your face.
So what has been bothering you about your beauty routine? I’ll bet you can fix them more easily than you think.
Most concerns can very easily be remedied with the help of a makeup artist like me or by talking to an aesthetician.
What do you have to lose?
It’s worth a try…and don’t forget that makeup washes off!

One of my brides introduced me to these a few weeks ago. I applied them with no hassles and they looked really beautiful, especially in the photo I snapped afterward. They’re $18 and worth every cent. If you are going to go the false lashes route, invest in some nice ones. You can re-use them, and there is enough glue for a few applications. I still stand by my preference for individual mini lashes, but I was pleasantly surprised by how good these looked!
With the holiday season fast approaching, this might be something for a debutante to consider adding to her makeup routine for the night of the ball.

False Eyelashes by Shu Uemura

Jennifer Lopez sporting controversial mink eyelashes
Lately I have had a lot of requests for false eyelash application. They are great in many respects: They can make your eyes look bigger and if applied tastefully they can really make a difference without being noticeable. People will ask what you’ve done differently. The only ones I use are the ones below and I still trim them to help them look less uniform. Individual false eyelashes take longer to apply but they look the most natural when applied after mascara. These eyelashes can even last more than a day or two if you are careful in taking off your eye makeup at night and use waterproof adhesive.
Eyelash strips are the easiest to detect and in my opinion are only great for Halloween, fun dress up evenings and costume parties. On the other hand, they look appropriately avant garde on the fashion runways and really do add an edge to your look.
On the down side, false eyelash application can cause your real ones to fall out, they can randomly fall off during the evening and they can feel heavy and awkward.
Basically, my advice is to use a light hand, start at the outer corners and work in towards the nose, not applying them past the mid point of the upper lash, trim them if necessary, always apply after you mascara and never on the bottom lash line.

Duralash Individual lashes for the most "natural" look

Aqua Lip Waterproof Lipliner Pencil Rosewood. $17 at Sephora
Changing the color you line your lips with will instantly update your look. If you’ve been wearing those amazing brights this summer, change your lip pencil to a darker hue and work it into the brighter lipstick to give it a darker or dirtier cast — this will mute it and make it fall-wearable.
I just found some brilliant Makeup Forever waterproof lip liners at Sephora. They’re worth a try, and stay on all day, and help you have a worry free wedding day. $17
Or, try Clinique Quickliner for Lips in Crushed Berry or Bamboo, $14.

Pale faces and bold lips were ubiquitous in the Fall 2010 shows last spring. Now is the time to shake up your lipstick wardrobe with reds from carrot to crimson. If you prefer a more understated lip look, invest in wine or eggplant tones. Remember to keep the rest of your look neutral allowing your lips to lead the way.

Before
I think this is excellent advice contributed by artist Pamela Jeschonek to the “Article” section of www.wedalert.com:
“…Ask any experienced Makeup Artist: the best makeup application in the world will not look its best if you have unmanaged eyebrows. The correct eyebrow shape can balance the face, make your eyes look larger and take years off your look. The trend right now is a natural, well-groomed eyebrow–a little thicker than in the recent past, but well-defined and soft. Gone are the days of pencil-thin eyebrows with a severe arch. Fairytale princesses had full, rounded eyebrows that gave them a soft, youthful, innocent look. Their wicked counterparts had severe, thin, highly arched brows that made them look mean, old and harsh. Definitely not the best look for a blushing bride!”

Finally!!!!!!!!!!! Someone else fesses up to wondering the same thing I’ve been wondering since I saw Twilight. In this day of movies featuring special effects that leave audiences completely awestruck, why can’t they get these poor vampires a decent makeup artist? Thank you, Vulture for saying it best: “How much money does a vampire have to earn before she deserves a decent wig? Must the werewolves get all the make-up crew’s love and attention?” Amen.

Click here to watch a very helpful video from top NYC photographer Sardi Klein:
Expert Tips for Looking Good in Photos – DailyCandy.
Here’s what Daily Candy has to say…
“Shiny forehead, freak grimace, bulging eyes — you’ve got an uncanny ability to ruin a photo. And thanks to Facebook tagging, the entire world can witness your awkward mugging until the end of time.
You could avoid cameras altogether. Or you could just watch today’s video, with its simple tips for looking great in pictures.
Our expert, Sardi Klein, longtime NYC photographer and professor at The New School and Pratt, has seen it all, from mothers of the bride who peer skyward to avoid double chins to businessmen whose phony smiles turn head shots into mug shots.
Follow her advice, and the next time someone tags you in a photo, you might just share instead of hide.”
